UAW Local 1853 Union Hall
UAW Local 1853 Union Hall located at 125 Stephen P. Yokich Parkway in Spring Hill, Tennessee features a banquet facility, full size gymnasium, running track, indoor pool, work-out gym, commercial kitchen and several meeting rooms.
The 14,000 sq. ft. Ron E. Boles banquet facility, gymnasium and the meeting rooms are available for rental throughout the year. The banquet facility contains a dance floor, stage and adjoining bar. The banquet facility and gymnasium can be used for a wide variety of events such as weddings, receptions, reunions and other large gatherings. The smaller meeting rooms may be used for birthday parties, seminars and other training events.
To book an event at the Union Hall, you may do so on Tuesdays and Thursdays, between the hours of 8:30am and 5pm by calling the Local 1853’s Maintenance and Event Coordinator Ray Shepherd at 931-489-3163. Dates may book many months or even years in advance so please call ahead for availability. The UAW Hall is a smoke free building.

The Banquet Hall will seat approximatley 250 comfortably with the dance floor open and about 325 without the dance floor. The Gymnasium will seat about 500 and the Multi-purpose room will seat 60. Seating capacities are configured with tables included.

Getting to Know the Work/Family Program
Occasionally everyone has problems that become hard to handle alone. That’s why the UAW and GM offer a Work/Family Program (WFP). The WFP provides team members and their dependents free, confidential and professional assistance to help resolve problems that may affect them in their personal lives or on the job. To help you understand how the WFP can help you to be at your best, we have addressed some of the most commonly asked questions about the program.
Who can use the Work/Family Program?
The Work/Family Program is available to all UAW/GM team members and their eligible dependants. Eligibility begins when team members and their family members become qualified for the Health Care Plan they are enrolled in.
What are some of the typical concerns for which people turn to the Work/Family Program for help?
People use WFP for a wide range of issues, including:
Job or work stress
Parenting issues
Alcohol or drug dependencies
Burnout
Marital or relationship problems
Anxiety or depression
Anger management
Coping with change
Self-esteem issues
Grief or bereavement
Is the program really confidential?
All WFP records and services are treated with the strictest confidence. The personal information that you share with your WFP representative is confidential, unless you sign a release of information or if the law requires disclosure.
When should I contact the Work/Family Program?
You should call the WFP any time you need help working out a personal problem. The philosophy of these programs is that problems are most effectively handled before they become serious. The key is to get assistance as soon as a problem begins affecting your work or personal life.
How much does using the Work/Family Program cost?
Most costs of Work/Family Program referral resources are handled under the provisions of the UAW/GM employee benefits plans. You should obtain specific information about your coverage as it pertains to you and your family members from a UAW Benefit Representative.

Members of this committee determine the needs of our membership and provides classes, material and information based on these needs. In many subject areas "on the shelf" programs exist that can be delivered to our members. If you are unfamiliar with consumer affairs, we are here to heighten your awareness of consumer rights among UAW members which in turn helps to protect us and gives us a voice in the marketplace. This committee addresses issues from pricing to unfair business practices. It gives people the needed resources to help them solve problems. Our goal is to help all union members make informed choices.
We also support legislation at the community, state and federal levels. Promote consumer representation on appropriate governmental committees, boards, and councils. We help establish relationships with national, state, and community organizations which have a major commitment to consumer problems. And are working to develop comprehensive programs designed to deal with basic causes of fundamental consumer problems at the national, state and local levels.
The Local Union Community Services Committee acquaints members with the community’s health and welfare services - how they can be reached; what kinds of programs they offer. Social Services are an important part of any community, but they cannot serve citizens in need who are unaware of them. The Committee can refer to community welfare agencies, in a sympathetic and confidential manner, fellow members who may need advice or aid in a family or personal health or welfare problem. By giving counseling and referral, we help our members and their families to solve problems that are outside and beyond the work site.

The Communication Committee is responsible for the in plant news publications and this website. We have two publications the UAW News (currently "from the Hall"), which is printed weekly or monthly, and The Wheel, which is published quarterly when possible. The UAW News and The Wheel have been recognized by the Local Union Press Association (LUPA) for outstanding coverage of Local Union News and for graphic design. The publications are printed under the authority of the Local President’s office.

The Civil Rights committee is an essential guardian of the "No discrimination policy" of our Union. Members of this committee fulfill the Local Union’s commitment to assure members full rights regardless of religion, race creed, color, sex, political affiliation, nationality, age, disability, marital status or sexual orientation.
The Committee informs members of steps and procedures, including filing complaints and hearings, whenever a member or members believe their rights have been violated, either by management or other Union members. The committee works toward the elimination of discrimination in the workplace, the community and the nation. Members of this committee have the opportunity to keep the Local Union moving toward the fulfillment of our UAW commitment on the civil rights front.
This committee needs members who feel a moral obligation to speak out on issues of intolerance, injustice and bigotry and to rebuke any person or group that expresses such and activity.

The bylaws of each Local Union, with the UAW Constitution, set out the rules by which the Local operates. In a new Local, the work of this committee sets the stage for how the local will function. But, even well established locals may need to modify or amend their Bylaws.
Members of this committee are responsible for submitting original and/or amended bylaws provisions to the Local Union membership for discussion and approval. This committee monitors the required Local Union Bylaws amendment procedure to ensure compliance with the current bylaws and constitutional provisions.
Once the amended Bylaws provision(s) has been approved by the Local Union membership, this committee monitors the process to ensure that the amendment is immediately submitted to the International Executive Board pursuant to Article 37, Section 3 of the Constitution. Join this committee to strengthen your Local Union’s Bylaws and structure.
Standing Committees
An effective Standing Committee is a motivated, energetic and innovative group of members who can apply their abilities to their areas of interest. Standing Committees work in cooperation with the Local’s, President’s office and the Executive Board. They identify topics, programs and issues that are important to the membership, the community, the Local Union, the International Union and labor movement as a whole. They develop plans and proposals for activities and, when approved by the Local Union’s Executive Board, carry out those plans. Standing Committees also are obligated to report out at membership meetings on the progress of their activities and future plans.

Leadership Roles
Executive Board
The Executive Board is the administrative arm of the local. They are charged with enforcing the UAW Constitution and Local Union By-laws. Each elected member is responsible for the duties unique to his or her position. They also make recommendations, through majority vote, for the membership. The Executive Board shall be empowered to represent the local between membership meetings.
President
It is the duty of the President to: preside at all Executive Board and union meetings; approve and sign all checks and vouchers; enforce through the Executive Board the UAW Constitution; appoint Committee Chairpersons; make recommendations for all Local and Internationally appointed positions; and conduct or preside over all administrative jobs relative to the Local Union.
Vice President
It is the duty of the vice-president to assist the President and assume full responsibilities upon the President’s absence.
Recording Secretary
It is the duty of the recording secretary to record proceedings of all membership, Executive Board, and any other special meetings. He or she will handle all administrative work pertaining to appeals and take care of union correspondence.
Financial Secretary
The financial secretary is responsible for all Union finances. He or she must countersign all checks, write all checks drawn on the Local Union funds, and submit a report in writing every month at every union meeting. His or her job responsibilities are vast and complicated. A complete job description is found in the UAW Constitution.
Trustees
There are three Trustees. They have charge of supervising Local funds and property. They arrange for semi-annual audits of Local Union money, equipment and materials, and they take care of the general upkeep of the Local Union Hall.

Maintains order and verifies membership qualifications.
E-Board at Large
These elected members are the direct pipeline to the Executive Board. They have a voice and vote on the Local Union’s Executive Board.

This elected member from the Retirees Committee has a voice and vote on the Local Union’s Executive Board.

Shop Committee members are District Committeepersons. Their duties consist of handling grievances at second step and bargaining Local Agreements with Management. The elected Skilled Trades Shop Committeeperson and the two elected Zone Committepersons are automatic members.
Shop Committee Chairman
It is the duty of the Chairman to: presides at the Shop Committee meetings, handle third step appeals with management and the international and meets with management and the Umpire Staff on forth step appeals. He or She is also a member of the Executive Board at Large, with primary duties as Zone Committeeperson.
District Committeeperson
The District Committeeperson represents and defends members of his district in contractual issues with management. It is their job to enforce both the Local and National contract.
Alternate Committeepersons
Will function in the district in which they were elected in the absence of the regular Committeeperson.
